There are a number of different types of moving average, the most commonly used ones in technical analysis are the Simple Moving Average and the Exponential Moving Average. Mostly the moving averages are created using the closing price although any data set can be used. Simple moving averages are defined by computing the average price of a security over a number of periods, say 10. For example, a 10 day simple moving average is calculated by adding up all of the closing prices for the past 10 days and then dividing the total by 10. A simple moving average gives equal "weight" to every item of past data, whereas an Exponential Moving Average gives more "weight" or importance to the most recent data. More will be added on this subject later.
