A Price Rate Of Change ROC indicator (percent method) is calculated by dividing the price change over the previous, say 10  periods, by the closing price of the security the same 10 periods ago.

This calculates the percentage that the security's price has altered over that time
.
If the security's price is higher than 10 periods ago, the ROC. will be a positive number. If the security's price is lower today than 10 periods ago, the ROC will be a negative number.

On the chart below there is a 10 period ROC of the BSE Sensex. Any length period can be used to show the trends over a period of time.
